The Jonas Brothers(rising rockstars) all practice abstinence and wear purity rings to prove it. Here’s a snippet from the very lengthy article on the JoBros featured in Details Magazine:
“On a quiet Friday morning in a dressing room at Madison Square Garden, the Jonas Brothers hold out their hands to show off their purity rings. Kevin(20), Joe(18), and Nick(15) Jonas—the teen-pop trio who stand, at this very moment, on the brink of hugeness—wear the metal bands on their fingers to symbolize, as Joe puts it, ‘promises to ourselves and to God that we’ll stay pure till marriage.’
Rock star celebrities are usually associated with sex, booze and drugs. We now have a new breed of stars who not only abstain from them, but also make a public statement out of it by wearing Purity Bands! Trends are indeed changing, but what has set tongues wagging about this simple statement?
It is the challenge of our perception! While we have been induced to percieve celebrities as rich, moral-free beings here comes a good looking band of brothers who uphold chastity.
Do you not agree that the prototypes of celebrities in our cognitive schemata have been challenged, thus amplifying the decent act by the Jonas Brothers!
Am i right in saying that Figure and ground in organization principals of perception have also come into play here. Against the back drop of "moral-free" celebrities, The Jonas Brothers act of brandishing a purity ring has to be the focus.
I believe that these could be a few reasons for why this(wearing the ring)has become a hot topic in the celebrity world. Anything which challenges our social perception is bound to get people talking!

this stunt isin't exactly new, so how long do you think they will last? (read Vanessa Hudgens of Disney's 'High School Musical' fame's nude photos and Disney's 'Princess Diaries' Anne Hathaway R rated movie 'Havoc'.
sometimes i am disgusted at the lengths people will go just to create a little publicity. so Oscar Wilde said `There's only one thing worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about.'
Most of our prototypes of celebrities have certainly been challenged. But to what effect? And that is exactly what Zed mentioned, to generate publicity! A little something extra or out of the ordinary, and people are bound to take notice, especially in such a competitive circle. At least they have made well the use of communication principles to set tongues wagging!
Hm... I wouldn't say they are rock stars. More like pop-rock stars, which are hardly in the same league as say the Foo Fighters or Red Hot Chili Peppers type of music. In the history of pop culture, teen idols have increased sales by presenting a squeaky clean image of themselves initially. Think of Britney Spears who declared she would remain a virgin until marriage, or Mandy Moor who was the daughter of a pastor.
Personally, I don't give a woot about whatever they say. They're all carefully planned products of commercialisation, designed to bring in big bucks for the music moguls. Many hollywod child stars become screwed up for a good reason - because no matter what values they may truly try to uphold, their corrupt surroundings bring them down.
.. Although I'm not necessarily saying that the Jonas Brothers might go on that path. :] Perhaps they really are chaste, who knows.
Well, its good that celebs always comes out with some new and unique ideas for entertainment value, at least the world wouldnt be so boring where nothing new appears. Dont you think so? However, like what zed said, its sometimes unacceptable that celebs go overboard.
I like the idea of purity rings anyway =D

Well whether this is a publicity stunt or whether it will last. Lets just saw this boys have made Purity the new black!

It is interesting how the figure and ground for this scenario is the Jonas Brothers and their act of purity(figure) and other moral-free celebrities(ground)..
Have you considered the Purity Ring as the figure and the Jonas Brothers as the ground?

Yeah i guess the figure and ground can be used in your example as well. I just felt that the personal prototypes of the Jonas brothers were not very contrasting to be used as the ground!

If you ask me, celebrities do things like this for the mere attention. But why? Insecuritites? Or do they just want their name to be further in the limelight. As far as i am concerned these are nothing but mere publicity stunts all in the name of wanting more fame and glory. We all know about Britney and her moment of madness when she shved her head.
You can consider this act something like that too.
